Greenville Technical College officially opened its $25 million Gene Haas Center for Manufacturing Innovation on Wednesday in a 100,000 square-foot space filled with classrooms and machines that some called one of the best advanced manufacturing education facilities in the nation.

The facility, paid for with a $25 million bond issued by Greenville County, is designed to attack the skills gap that exists in the workforce as manufacturers seek skilled technicians and engineers to fill positions at local manufacturers . . .

Jack Schron has a built a state-of-the art CNC machining cell at Jergens Inc.’s main plant on Cleveland’s Waterloo Road. But he doesn’t intend to use it to make the machine tool fixtures or other products that Jergens is known for.

Instead, he said, the cell is open for use by area schools, material science engineers, tooling companies and just about anyone else with a product to test or a student to teach in the ways of modern manufacturing.
